Mr. Thorsten Stolwijk – PhD, Ophthalmologist

Dr. Thorsten Stolwijk studied medicine at Leiden University in 1988. He subsequently conducted international research at the Department of Ophthalmology at Leiden University Medical Center on early detection and prevention of (retinal) eye disease, particularly in diabetes and glaucoma patients.

In 1991, Dr. Thorsten Stolwijk obtained his PhD Cum Laude with the thesis entitled: Fluorophotometry and tear fluid analysis in diabetic patients” at Leiden University.
In 1993, he started specializing as an ophthalmologist at Leiden University. In 1997, Dr. Thorsten Stolwijk further specialized at the eye hospital in Rotterdam by following the cataract surgery fellowship with Dr. Pameijer, ophthalmologist, and an eyelid correction fellowship with Dr. van de Bosch, ophthalmologist.

From 1998 to 2014, Dr. Thorsten Stolwijk was affiliated with Lievensberg Hospital, where he was a member of the OR committee from 2002 and a member of the staff board. He led a specialized independent (medical) contact lens department at Lievensberg Hospital since 2000, now part of the Stolmed Eye Clinics.

In 2006, Dr. Thorsten Stolwijk started an independent eye clinic in Rucphen, with expansion to Etten Leur (2007) and Goes (2011). At the end of 2013, a fourth clinic was opened in Zevenbergen and shortly after that, the fifth in Bergen op Zoom was put into use.

To date (2015), Dr. Thorsten Stolwijk has performed approximately 8,000 eyelid corrections and more than 11,000 cataract operations.

Specialization and memberships

Dr. Thorsten Stolwijk specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and glaucoma, (cosmetic) eyelid operations and cataract lens operations and the fitting of special “premium lenses”, so that wearing glasses is no longer necessary.

Dr. Thorsten Stolwijk is a member of various Dutch and international professional associations:
