Electric epilation
Electric epilation is the removal of hairs and hair follicles that grow inward, causing them to scratch the cornea (Trichiasis). The hairs touch the cornea because the upper or lower eyelid is turned inward. There are several causes for Trichiasis, such as:
- Age, aging of the tissue in the eyelid causing sagging
- Scars on the inside of the eyelid
- Convulsive squinting of the eyes
- Congenital defect
Symptoms
Hairs scratching the cornea can cause irritation, a sandy feeling in the eyes or sensitivity to light. The eye may also look red. The cornea can become damaged, which can reduce vision or, in the worst case, lead to blindness.
For whom
People whose hairs cause complaints, so it is wise to have them removed.
Day of the procedure
You may eat normally before the procedure. Make sure you are there on time. We advise you not to drive your own car after the procedure. We recommend that you bring someone who can guide you. Due to sterile working conditions, a supervisor cannot be present during the treatment. He/she can wait in the waiting area.
Blood thinners
If you use blood thinners, you must inform your ophthalmologist. The ophthalmologist will discuss with you whether and for how long you should stop taking the medication before the procedure. It is also important that you indicate the use of painkillers as they can have a blood thinning effect.
The procedure
The inwardly twisted hairs are removed using a small needle with a current.
This is done under local anesthesia and takes about 10 minutes. In more than 90% of cases, the treatment has a positive effect.
After the procedure
After about 8 weeks there will be a check-up. It is possible that blood forms under the skin around the eye.
