Blepharitis
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid margin that is often chronic and causes redness, itching and flaking. It is usually caused by bacteria or skin diseases such as rosacea. There are two types: anterior blepharitis, which affects the outer eyelid margin, and posterior blepharitis, which affects the inner edge of the eyelid due to dysfunction of the meibomian glands.
Treatment
Blepharitis can be or become a persistent chronic condition. As a treatment, regular cleaning of the eyelash edges with specially designed cotton swabs moistened with cleaning fluid generally helps. Artificial tears are also often provided. The ophthalmologist will discuss this with you and check whether the treatment is going well.
