Special implant lenses
My Eyecare Algarve prefers to use a premium lens.
If you choose to be treated for cataracts by us, you will preferably receive a premium lens. Almost all the lenses we use are equipped with an ultraviolet yellow filter and are therefore protected against harmful blue light. This prevents possible damage to the retina in the future. You will decide together with your ophthalmologist which lens is best suited for you; there are different options.
Standard lens.
This lens will ensure that you have good vision again. You will have optimal protection for your eye and most of your eye strength will have been corrected. For the best results, you will still need to use reading glasses and/or in many cases also distance glasses with this lens.
Premium Toric.
The Premium Toric is a lens for people with cylinder power. This lens corrects the cylinder power of the eye for one distance: near or far. You generally no longer need glasses for that distance.
Premium Bifocal.
This lens has been specially developed to allow you to see clearly near and far without glasses, so that you no longer need (reading) glasses. This is because the Premium Bifocal lens has a unique optical pattern that closely approximates the natural focusing ability of the eye lens. A study shows that approximately 85% of people no longer need glasses after having this lens installed.
Premium Bifocal and Toric.
This lens has the same properties and advantages as the normal Bifocal lens. However, this lens is especially for people whose cylinder strength also needs to be adjusted.
Are these implant lenses covered by my insurance?
Hospitals and clinics receive a fixed rate from the health insurer for performing cataract surgery. Within this rate, a certain amount is provided for the implant lens. This means that if you choose the special lenses, you must take a personal contribution into account. This depends on the type of lens that suits you best. When considering these costs, do not forget that most people no longer need glasses after the operation. You will therefore no longer have to incur these costs. Please feel free to ask us what the costs for the additional payment are*.
Lens fitting
Bij het aanmeten van een speciale lens behoort ook een speciaal onderzoek. Tijdens dit uitgebreide onderzoek worden alle metingen gedaan die nodig zijn voor het bepalen van de juiste lens. Ook wordt er aan de hand van de uitkomsten nogmaals met u nagegaan welke optie voor u het beste zal zijn. Dit onderzoek wordt afgenomen door onze ervaren optometristen in samenspraak met uw behandelend oogarts. Hierna wordt gelijk uw lens besteld om snel te kunnen opereren.

The operation
Cataract surgery with a premium lens is the same as the placement of a standard lens. This is performed as a day procedure in a special operating room intended for this purpose. You may eat normally and take any medications before the operation. The operation is usually performed under local drop anesthesia. The entire procedure takes approximately 15-30 minutes.
After the operation, eye ointment is administered to the operated eye to prevent inflammatory reactions. You will also receive a bandage and an eye cover for protection. You can resume many of your normal activities a short time after surgery. Within a few days you will usually see significantly better.
Cataract surgery is one of the most successful operations performed today. In approximately 95% of cases the operation proceeds without any problems, with the maximum achievable result. After cataract surgery, a world opens up for you. You will see clearer, clearer and sharper than you have in years.
